Target pH: 7.4 to 7.6. Target free chlorine: 3 to 5 ppm heading into storm season (higher than the standard 1 to 3 ppm you might run in spring). Target alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm. The reasoning is straightforward — a haboob is going to drive your pH up and your chlorine down. If you enter the storm with chlorine at 1.5 ppm, you may exit it with chlorine at near zero. If you enter at 4 ppm, you have margin.

Shock your pool the evening before a forecasted storm if you can. Running the pump overnight to circulate the shock treatment means the water is actively protected when the debris hits.

Clear the deck and protect loose equipment
