How to run the pool bucket test

Step 1 — Fill and place the bucket

Fill the bucket with pool water to about two inches from the top. Set it on the first or second step so it sits partially submerged — the water inside and the pool water should be at roughly the same temperature, exposed to the same sun and wind. Do not set the bucket on the deck; temperature differences will skew the evaporation rate.

Mark the current water level inside the bucket with your marker. Then mark the pool's current water level on the wall or tile.

Step 2 — Wait 48 hours

Leave everything alone. Run the pool on its normal pump schedule. Don't add water, don't backwash the filter, and don't run any water features that spray or mist — those all accelerate surface evaporation in ways the bucket won't replicate.
